Mosquito Treatments Underway Across Orange County

Mosquito Treatments Underway Across Orange County are targeting neighborhoods in Anaheim, Buena Park and Fullerton this week as vector control officials respond to elevated mosquito numbers.

The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District lists overnight treatments in all three cities from September 9 through September 11, generally between midnight and 5:30 a.m. Mission Viejo is also scheduled for overnight truck treatment on September 10 and 11.

Mosquito Treatments Underway Across Orange County: What Residents Should Know

The current schedule covers targeted areas rather than entire cities. In Anaheim, crews are using DeltaGard from midnight to 5:30 a.m. on September 9, 10 and 11. The district lists mosquito abundance as the reason for the application.

Buena Park and Fullerton are on the same three-night schedule, with AquaDuet being applied from midnight to 5:30 a.m. The official schedule also lists mosquito abundance as the reason for those treatments. Residents can check the district’s residential truck-mounted treatment information and maps to determine whether their neighborhood is included.

Mission Viejo is next. DeltaGard truck treatment is scheduled there for September 10 and 11, also from midnight to 5:30 a.m. The district says treatments may continue during the biting season if mosquito numbers persist or mosquito-borne disease is present.

Orange County Has Been Treating Mosquito Hot Spots for Weeks

This week’s applications are not an isolated event. OCMVCD records show repeated large-area mosquito treatments across Orange County throughout the summer, including previous applications in Anaheim, Buena Park, Fullerton, Cypress, Tustin, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach and other communities.

The district’s large-area mosquito treatment history shows another round was completed just last week. From September 2 through September 4, crews treated areas in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Stanton, Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor. Most of those applications were also attributed to mosquito abundance.

OCMVCD says adult mosquito control can be initiated when surveillance detects an increase in mosquitoes in a particular area or virus activity in mosquitoes. The district uses ultra-low-volume equipment to disperse small quantities of mosquito-control products from trucks in targeted areas.

That distinction matters. The district specifically lists mosquito abundance as the reason for the September 9 treatments in Anaheim, Buena Park and Fullerton. The current schedule does not identify West Nile virus as the stated reason for these particular applications, so these treatments should not be described as a West Nile spraying operation without additional evidence.

Why Mosquito Control Is Continuing Into September

September can still bring plenty of mosquito activity to Southern California. Warm temperatures and small collections of standing water around homes can provide breeding habitat, particularly for invasive Aedes mosquitoes.

Orange County is also testing other approaches to mosquito control. In Mission Viejo, OCMVCD has been evaluating a Sterile Insect Technique program targeting Aedes aegypti. The district says the species is prevalent in the area and commonly breeds in small containers such as buckets, toys, tires and plant saucers.

For residents, reducing standing water remains one of the most practical ways to limit mosquito breeding around a property. Buckets, plant saucers, children’s toys and other containers can hold enough water to become breeding sites.

PestMarket’s mosquito control guide covers common mosquito breeding areas around homes and steps residents can take to reduce them.

For people living in the current treatment zones, the most useful resource is OCMVCD’s treatment maps. Because applications target specific neighborhoods rather than every address within Anaheim, Buena Park, Fullerton or Mission Viejo, residents should check their location against the district’s map rather than assume the entire city is being treated.

Mosquito Treatments Underway Across Orange County are scheduled to continue through Friday morning in the currently listed areas. Additional treatments may follow if mosquito numbers remain elevated.
